Virginia Tech completed its 20th consecutive winning season with a 13-10 overtime victory over Rutgers in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. The Hokies rallied from a 10-0 deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter before Cody Journell's field goal in overtime gave them their first lead of the game. They sealed the victory when Rutgers kicker Nick Borgese missed a 42-yard field goal attempt in the Scarlet Knights' overtime possession.

The team holds the nation’s longest active bowl winning streak at five along with Mississippi State. This will be the teams’ seventh bowl in the past eight years.
